Mr. and Miss. Mathare.
We can use words, music or even force to bring people together. What happens when we bring beauty into community development work? This is what The project ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mathare’ seeks to accomplish. Mathare is an informal settlement in Nairobi that houses Nairobi’s young vibrant youth, who for one reason or another are not in mainstream work situations and therefore find themselves caught in between ‘wrong and right’ and they ,from a very young age, are consciously aware that they have to constantly make choices between these two and that makes all the difference. Initiatives such as this bring the young together and try to focus their energy to community development work.
The Mr. and Miss Mathare will be ambassadors representing the Mathare youth in the various forums, conferences and campaigns that aim to improve livelihood and education of the young people in Kenya. The two will also be officials of organizing committee of future beauty pageants. They shall also be members of New Image youth Group.Miss Mathare will be tasked with addressing issues affecting girls and young mothers while Mr. Mathare will be tasked with addressing drug abuse and criminals activities among youth as well as build networks with stake holders.
The project seeks to impact a total of 700,000 people within the Mathare and Ruaraka constituencies with messages of hope and determination to continue to cultivate their desires for a community free from the dependency syndrome. The project will also incorporate women from the community who will compete in different categories at the event. The aim of the inclusion is to enhance ownership of the project by the entire community and also involve women in mentoring young girls. Therefore we will also have Mrs. Mathare who will represent women issues during and after the event.
The general objective of the project is to breath hope to the Mathare community and to make the community conscious of what needs to be done to improve their community.
The Mr. and Miss. Mathare pageant was held on the 19th of this month and here is the visual representation of the day https://www.facebook.com/wycliffe.edger/media_set?set=a.567683273286568.1073741835.100001347025917&type=1
