Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development (MSD) Ethiopia
Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development (MSD) is a local NGO in Ethiopia that was first set up as an anti-AIDS youth club in Gondar Town in 1999 and registered as a non-profit in 2004. MSD operates under the principles of accountability, integrity, transparency, partnership and participation. Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development has its head office in Addis Ababa but also works in Amhara and Tigray.
MSD envisions a community where youth and children are able to realize their full potential and actively engage in socio-economic development activities in their country. It seeks to make this community a reality by helping youth and children get access to education and opportunities and develop their skills.
Specifically, Mahibere Hiwot focuses on sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention, care and support, access to quality education, and environmental conservation among others. Focusing on these areas MSD has successfully:
- increased access to youth-focused sexual and reproductive health information and services through Bahir Dar Youth Center
- empowered victims of early marriage through education and awareness campaigns with the support of Pathfinder International – Ethiopia
- Implemented HIV prevention programs in Gondar, Bahirdar, and Debre Markos universities
- Empowered people economically in Gondar, Dabat Woredas, and Amhara through urban gardening programs
